I manage the calls, not the repair
I am the office administrator for a 75-person industrial packaging company. I handle roughly $600,000 in annual facility and equipment orders, and I have been in the seat since 2020. I do not repair Danfoss VFD drives, but when a drive stops a production line, I am the one who manages the support call. The first decision is always the same: call Danfoss VFD tech support directly, or call the distributor who sold us the drive?
That may sound like a technical question, but it is really a purchasing question. Both routes can answer a question. The difference is which route can answer our question faster and with less noise.
Route A: Danfoss VFD tech support direct
Factory support has the deepest product knowledge. If the issue involves firmware, special parameters, commissioning files, or a fault code that is difficult to explain, Danfoss makes sense. The people on that line have access to current documentation and the latest drive software. According to the VLT documentation I keep on hand, the type code and serial number on the nameplate are the place where every support call starts.
The limitation is context. They cannot see our control panel, our motor, or our order history. If I call without a fault code, one of the first questions will be about the display. In my opinion, direct support is not the fastest route if your call starts cold.
Route B: Distributor support
The distributor who sold us the Danfoss drive has our order history. They know which VFD drives replaced older units and which options we selected. They can pull up a past invoice, see whether we bought a display, and quote a replacement later. In an emergency, this saves time.
The trade-off is depth. A distributor service person may need to refer to Danfoss if the problem is an unusual software issue. That can add a second call. But for local context, spare parts, and response time, distributor support is usually closer to the machine.
Comparison 1: What the control panel says
The first comparison is not between phone numbers. It is between two types of information. Before choosing a support route, I need the drive’s own statement.
A Danfoss VFD local control panel is not a plane control panel with dozens of gauges, but it should be scanned with the same respect. It shows when the drive is running, stopped, tripped, or faulted. If it has an alarm, the display often gives a code that the manual explains. I ask our maintenance person to record that code and take a picture if possible.
Once you know the code, the support route becomes clearer. A warning may be solved by checking input voltage and cooling fans. A hard trip may need someone with a meter. That distinction helps because manufacturers and distributors handle these situations differently.
Comparison 2: The multimeter moment
Somewhere in the support conversation, someone will mention current. If the drive is still able to run, the control panel can display output current. If not, support may ask for a live measurement.
The safe way to measure current with a multimeter on a VFD output is to use a true-RMS clamp multimeter around a single motor lead while an electrically qualified person performs the test. I am not an electrical instructor, so I will not take this further. If that instruction is outside your training, stop there and ask for help.

Comparison 3: Replacement and parts

In our shop, Danfoss VFD tech support confirms whether the drive has failed in a way we can repair. The distributor turns that answer into a purchase order and a delivery date.
This is why I rarely skip the distributor. Even if direct support likely knows the drive, they will often route us to an authorized outlet for the sale.
The filter-lookup trap
I will use an odd example. I can do a mobil oil filter lookup for a truck and trust the result quickly. The filter has a standard application: engine model, filter part, maybe thread size. You rarely have to program an oil filter. A VFD is the opposite.
In 2023 I tried to shorten a replacement process by using the same lookup logic. I ordered what appeared to be the right Danfoss drive type code from a parts site, without checking the full nameplate options. Looking back, I should have checked the old drive’s option fields before placing the order. The core unit was close, but the software options did not match, and we lost about two days. The catalog was not trying to mislead me. VFDs simply do not reduce to one simple lookup.
How I decide
If you ask me, the best route depends on how far from a simple lookup the problem is.
- Use Danfoss VFD tech support first when the fault code is unfamiliar, when parameters may have changed, or when two Danfoss VFD drives behave differently with the same settings.
- Call the distributor first when you suspect a failed component, when you need a replacement quote, or when you need someone local to see the machine.
The industry has changed. Ten years ago, the most reliable support file sat in an electrician’s head. Now a buyer can gather a fault code, a control panel photo, and a current reading, then send them to the right person. Fundamentals have not changed: never open a drive unless it is de-energized and locked out, and never attempt a live current measurement unless you are qualified. The execution is just more searchable, and that is good for the people who handle purchase orders.
The bottom line? If I can answer the control panel question and the current question, I can pick the route. If I cannot, I call Danfoss VFD tech support and let them direct the next step.
