Before you order a Danfoss VFD drive, run through this checklist. I manage repair parts and maintenance budgets for a 400-person manufacturing plant, which means I see both sides of a bad purchase: the purchase order and the production stoppage that follows. This is the list I use to avoid making the same expensive mistake twice.
This checklist is for people who are replacing or quoting a Danfoss VFD controller. It is also useful if you are troubleshooting a machine and need to decide whether the problem is in the drive or the motor. A commercial washing machine control panel, an HVAC air handler, a conveyor—they all hide the same kind of speed-control electronics behind different cabinet doors.
There are five checks here. Step 2 is one I ignored on a quote and paid for later. Step 4 is the one that saves us from replacing healthy drives.
Step 1: Confirm the exact Danfoss drive type code before you search by horsepower
Danfoss VFD drives use a type code that tells the supplier a lot. It includes voltage, enclosure rating, RFI filter, braking option, display, and optional cards. Two drives can look the same from the front and still have completely different part numbers.
Take a photo of the old drive nameplate. Actually, take two photos: one close-up of the type code and one wide enough to read the full rating data. When the supplier asks what input voltage you have or whether you need a display, you can answer without guessing.
Cost lesson: In 2022, I ordered by horsepower only and missed the enclosure rating. The replacement drive was electrically correct, but it was not rated for the washdown environment. The restocking fee was 15 percent, and we lost a week. That week cost more than the fee. Since then, no VFD quote request leaves my desk without a nameplate photo.
Step 2: Decide whether the application actually needs a bypass isolation transfer switch
The words bypass isolation transfer switch sound like an optional add-on. They can be optional for some motors. But if you quote a critical fan or pump without one, hidden downtime can show up later.
In simplest terms, a bypass isolation transfer switch gives the motor another way to run. The motor can be started directly from line power without sending power through the VFD controller. That is useful for a pump or fan that needs to keep moving while the drive is removed for repair. It also gives a technician a way to run the motor to prove whether the fault is in the drive or in the motor.
National Electrical Code, Article 430, covers motor disconnecting means. A VFD cabinet alone does not always satisfy the full requirement, so a licensed electrician should confirm the layout. The point is not to second-guess your electrical engineer. The point is to make the decision before the panel is built instead of discovering it during a change order.
For many variable-speed machines, a bypass is not appropriate. A commercial washing machine control panel is a good example. The VFD controller is there to control speed and ramps. If you bypass it, the motor may run at line speed with no controlled acceleration. That can be a bad idea. So do not let a supplier add a bypass to every quote without asking first. The right answer is the one that matches your actual machine and process.
Step 3: Put the connected motor's full-load amps on the quote
Horsepower tells you less than it seems. A VFD is current-limited. If you match the drive to the motor horsepower but ignore full-load amps, you might end up with a drive that trips on overload even when the motor is fine.
Write the motor nameplate data directly into the quote request. Include full-load amps, voltage, phase, and motor service factor if the motor has one. If the motor is not accessible, say that in the request. That pushes the supplier to ask better questions instead of making assumptions.
This is also the time to ask whether the motor has been tested recently. If the machine stopped because of a VFD fault, do not assume the fault is in the drive. The next step is where a multimeter earns its keep.
Step 4: What is the continuity setting on a multimeter—and when to use it
Before touching a meter, answer the basic question. The continuity setting on a multimeter is a mode that sends a small test voltage through the leads and sounds a tone when there is a continuous path. It is useful for checking fuses, wires, contacts, and whether a motor winding is open.
But when I suspect a three-phase motor problem, I also switch to the resistance mode. The continuity setting can tell you yes or no, but it does not always show you the exact resistance. Set the meter to ohms, disconnect the motor from the VFD, and measure between U-V, V-W, and W-U. A healthy motor should show low and similar readings on all three phases. One open phase means no continuity. One significantly different reading means the motor needs attention before you spend money on electronics.
A washing machine control panel taught me this. The machine stopped mid-cycle with an overcurrent fault on its VFD. The first instinct was to replace the drive because it was old. I asked the technician to disconnect the motor and measure the windings first. One phase had no continuity. A new Danfoss VFD drive would have shown the same fault, and we would still be waiting on a motor. The meter is the fastest part of troubleshooting.
Never use the continuity setting or any ohms function on an energized circuit. A Danfoss drive can hold dangerous voltage on the DC bus after the incoming power is off. Lock it out, wait for the discharge time listed in the drive manual, and verify zero voltage before touching anything. If you are not trained to work inside a drive, stop and call someone who is.
Also check your test leads before trusting them. Touch the tips together and the multimeter should beep. If it does not, the leads or battery are suspect. One false open reading can make you replace a part that was never bad.
Step 5: Ask about firmware, manuals, and warranty before you issue the P.O.
By this point, the quote should include the exact drive type code, a clear decision about the bypass isolation transfer switch, and solid motor data. Now ask the questions that usually get skipped until after purchase:
- What firmware version will be loaded at the date of shipment?
- Is there local technical support that can help interpret fault codes?
- Which Danfoss manual applies to this drive? Can you send the relevant manual PDF?
- What does the warranty cover, and who handles the return if the drive is dead on arrival?
These questions sound administrative. They are actually cost questions. In 2023, a lower-priced VFD controller shipped with older firmware and no local technical support. It took longer to bring online than the cheaper quote saved. I can only speak to our purchases, but I now compare total cost, not just the invoice.
Parameter backup deserves its own line. If the old drive can still power on long enough to read parameters, save them before removal. If it cannot, be ready to reconfigure the VFD from the machine documentation. A commercial washing machine control panel, for example, may depend on specific fieldbus settings and speed commands. A brand-new VFD controller with default settings will not automatically match the rest of the machine.
Final reality check
If you remember only two sentences: do not buy a Danfoss VFD drive by horsepower alone, and do not replace a drive before checking the motor. Everything else in this checklist is protection against hidden cost, change orders, and downtime.
This approach works for us because we are a standard industrial plant with predictable repair orders. Your application may have different voltage, enclosure, or control system requirements. Ask the extra questions anyway. I would rather spend ten minutes explaining an option than deal with mismatched expectations after the panel is live. An informed customer asks better questions and usually gets a faster, cleaner quote.
